In the 1950s, at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem, N.Y., comic Willie Bryant emcees a variety show comprising some of the biggest names in African-American music, comedy and dance. On hand to document the historic event is filmmaker Joseph Kohn, who points a steady lens on the lively performances of jazz legends Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton and Sarah Vaughan; stand-up comic Nipsey Russell; and the dynamic tap dance team of Charles "Honi" Coles and Cholly Atkins.
